Why you need a hand pump
Why would you ever choose one of these over an electric pump?
Let me tell you!
They can do the trick when you don’t need to pump often. Maybe you just need to pump occasionally and don’t want to deal with the whole setup of an electric pump.
Perfect for travel! Spending a few hours away from baby? Throw it in your purse and you’re good to go! You don’t need to worry about having an outlet available or about a battery holding charge.
Baby did an unexpected long stretch of sleep and you feel really full? Pop on the hand pump for a couple of minutes just enough to soften the breast before baby latches on when he wakes up.
Feelings of stress or trauma from using the electric pump. I recently had a client who had a baby in the NICU. When they got home, I met with them a couple of times and baby learned to breastfeed like a champ. Several months later, the mom had to be a way for a day and used her electric pump and it brought back all the sad and stressful feelings that came along with having a baby in the NICU. So she decided it was better for her mental health to use the hand pump when she needed to do the occasional pump session. It worked out well!
They are an inexpensive investment.
I hope this post convinced you of some of the reasons why a hand pump can be handy! (See what I did there?)
