Weighted feedings
Do you ever wonder exactly how much your baby is drinking while breastfeeding?
As long as you note swallowing when feeding, your baby is making enough wet and poopy diapers, and is content after most feedings, there’s no reason to have to know!
A weighted feeding is when we weigh the baby, feed the baby, and then weigh the baby again to see how much he/she drank. Weighted feedings CAN be helpful when you and your baby are working on effective breastfeeding, when supplementation is required, and when you are transitioning AWAY from supplementing and monitoring how effective baby is feeding at the breast.
Even then- one weighted feed is just a snapshot in time and no baby takes the same amount each feeding. After all, babies aren’t robots (as I love to remind people). It’s always important to look at the big picture!
If you have concerns about how feeding is going or are wondering if you need to supplement and/or increase your milk supply, always get in touch with an IBCLC who can help you evaluate what is going on and work with you to make a plan to help baby grow and thrive.
Happy feeding!
